- A detail of this map was illustrated in Glenn J. Lockwood's "Smiths Falls: A Social History of the Men and Women in a Rideau Canal Community 1794-1994", p.17 - plate 9 - the caption reads: "Detail from map of Elmsley township showing the eastern section of concessions one to six, prepared by the surveyor John Stegmann, 1804. This map is of interest for two reasons. It offers a rare depiction of the original dimensions and course of the Rideau River and its tributaries in the immediate region around Smyth's falls before the mill dam of 1823 and canalisation beginning in 1827 altered forever the configuration of the waterway. The east end of the lower Rideau Lake can be seen in the upper left hand corner, and Lock Island is clearly discernible, but Jason Island is obscured under the second S of the name SMITHS FALLs added at a later date. The map shows the stranglehold that the Smyth, Arnold and White families had on land around Smyth's falls, preventing the village from developing. On various lots the notation "The Heirs of Geo. Smith" has been crossed out and replace by the name of his son Thomas."
