Margaret was the daughter of George Mitchell (1851-1943) and Elizabeth Watson (1852-1907). George and Elizabeth were married on her parent's farm in Nassagaweya in July 1872.

Margaret, their eldest child was born August 23, 1875. Margaret's siblings included Joe (who farmed on the 11th Concession, Nassagaweya); Betty (who moved to California and became a teacher) and Jane (who farmed on the 10th Concession, Nassagaweya)

Margaret's mother died in 1907. Her father never remarried and died at Margaret's Martin Street nursing home on May 19, 1943 in his 92nd year.
