The 1898-99 Eastern Ontario gazetteer and directory published a straight forward listing of Smiths Falls. An opera house was noted as a part of the cultural scope of the community, which was founded by Ogle Carss at the corner of Church and Market streets. The population exceeds 4,000. Dr. Agnes Craine's name was published for the first time in a directory. The McGillivary family grew as entrepeneurs, working as grocers, general store owners, wool brokers and blacksmiths.
