For the first time the Smiths Falls town description listed a hospital - the Smiths Falls Public Hospital - in a directory, specifically the 1910-11 Province of Ontario Gazetteer and Directory. Telephone service was another new feature available in town. The directory also noted that there was a daily stage coach service available between Smiths Falls and Portland.
