The 1884 Counties of Carleton, Lanark, Prescott, Russell and Ottawa directory contained much information about Smiths Falls. It provided a brief history of Smiths Falls in its town description. The description was unrestrained in its current assessment of the village writing that "[i]n the unusual width of its streets, and its appearance generally, Smith's Falls compares most favorably with any place in the province, and impresses one with the conviction that it is alike one of the healthiest and most prosperous towns in the Dominion."
The business owners and professionals listing included individuals associated with town council, the public school, high school, the school board and fire brigade. The population reached over 2,000.
Montague Township and North Elmsley Township published a listing of its residents alphabetically by surname. The concession and lot numbers for residents were also indicated. Several pages of advertising were also featured.
