The
1866 & 1867 Fuller's Counties of Leeds, Grenville, Lanark and Renfrew Directory was highly detailed in its coverage of the counties. Smiths Falls was clearly described as a strong economic and transportation centre - "[a] ... thriving village, advantageously situated on the Rideau Canal, and a station on the Brockville and Ottawa railway." G.M. Cossitt and Frost & Wood received a one page write-up describing their respective manufacturing industries and business interests. Four pages of business and professional listings for Smiths Falls were published in the directory. On Main Street, the Elmsley Library and Mechanic's Institute had 13,000 books in its collection for borrowing. The newspaper,
The Smith's Falls Review, was another resident of Main Street, superseding
The Rideau Gleaner.
As seen at the bottom of this exhibit page, a number of Smiths Falls business owners eagerly advertised their products and services in the 1866 Fuller's county directory. This is the first known instance of Smiths Falls advertising in a directory, representing early examples of surviving local print advertising. The graphics used in the advertising depended upon a variety of font styles and simple visual designs. Mr. D.F. Hayes publicised his skills as both a dentist and a photographer, the first known occasion for both of these professions in a Smiths Falls directory listings.
Montague business owners, which was also locally described as Roseville, listed their products and services in the directory.
