Similar to the Canada Directory for 1857-58, the 1859 Leeds, Grenville, Lanark & Renfrew county directory also contained the individual names of local business owners and professionals. This directory, however, is distinct for being the first known directory to focus upon information on the counties level. In this publication business owners were organized by their specific profession rather than alphabetically by surname. Numerous general merchants, shoemakers and blacksmiths operated in Smiths Falls. The newspaper, The Rideau Gleaner, was noted in the business listings.
