Your letter came as a pleasant surprise and I am glad to hear from you. You do not say whether you are well or otherwise but trust you are really all right. What a glorious name your Canadians have made of the remarkable sacrifice made by the Colonies puts our fearful characters to awful shame. We get such confusing reports from the various papers, but Germany must be in an awful state.

Well now to business. I am glad to know the roses I sent out last season have done so well. On referring to your previous order, I see they were sent from her in early March so I will not forward them until the same date, and I can give you an entirely different selection this year. I will make a collection up from varieties marked in an enclosed list. The ones crossed out are the ones we sent in the last order. If you have any suggestions or further wishes regarding certain ones, perhaps you would kindly write me again.

I can assure you of my especial care and attention. I hope when these are in flower, the war will be over and you may get home in time to enjoy them. I think your climate will be first rate for them. I remember a Canadian I used to send to, saying he used to protect the plants during the winter by drawing some sawdust well round the crowns of them to the depth of six inches, but it was all taken away in the spring.
