From Forest to Factory
Gordon Mill
Saginaw Salt and Lumber Company, Thessalon, circa 1910
Saginaw Salt and Lumber Company, Thessalon, circa 1910 Details
The Gordon Mill was built by Dave Gordon, a logging foreman with Dyment Lumber Company in the Kirkwood operations.

Local historian J.E. MacDonald reports that Gordon left the Dyment Co. in the 1890s, sub-leased timber tracts and built his mill to process those logs. When the mill closed, the Asam Basket Factory was established in its place.

This colour photo reportedly shows the Saginaw Salt and Lumber Co. mill operation in the distance. The large log boom and mill in the foreground was originally the Gordon Mill, later known as the Asam Basket Factory (1919-1934).

This photo shows a boxcar on a railway siding in the centre of the photo. Behind it by the waters edge is a wooden building that looks abandoned. This building may be the original site of the Gordon Mill.
