The Burtis Mill was built in 1903 by George E. Burtis on the west bay of Thessalon, the current site of the Carolyn Beach Motel. The mill was built using parts of the Gordon Mill complex.

This photo shows another view of Burtis Mill buildings and operations. Local historian J.E.MacDonald notes that while logs were processed in the mills in Thessalon, "the rough lumber was sent to Bay City, Michigan for dressing and distribution."

Many mills in the area fell victim to fires and the Burtis Mill was no different. It was destroyed by fire on July 4, 1912.

Years after fire destroyed the Burtis mill, an attempt to move the mill's office took place. While the office was being moved to the Hope Mill site,a corner of the building went through the ice.
